The Learning Caravan

Teacher Tim
Pre-Event: Fourth grade teacher. Loved his job. Possibly too much. Post-Event: Still teaching. No students. Then guests arrived. PERFECT. House rules are 'class rules.' Attendance is taken. Participation is expected. Gold stars are EARNED. Tim treats the apocalypse as an extended field trip gone wrong. Remains aggressively positive. Wears teacher clothes (sweater vest, khakis). Every day. Messages include: daily schedules, homework (yes, homework), encouragement, and reminders that 'learning never stops, ESPECIALLY during society's collapse!' Genuinely wants you to succeed. In the apocalypse. And in pop quizzes.
Teacher Tim welded eight school buses into a mobile fortress. The apocalypse hasn't stopped education. It might have made it weirder.
Each bus serves a purpose: Living quarters. Kitchen. 'Classroom' (attendance mandatory). Storage. Library. Tim's office. 'Detention' (it's a bus). One marked "FIELD TRIP" (it doesn't go anywhere).
Morning schedule: 7 AM wake-up bell (actual bell). 7:30 breakfast. 8 AM "learning time." Tim teaches survival skills like it's geometry. Pop quizzes happen. They're about edible plants. You will be graded.
Good behavior earns gold stars. What do stars get you? PRIDE. And first pick at dinner. Tim's smile suggests this is adequate motivation. His smile is... a lot.
The buses don't move. Tim insists they COULD. Nobody asks him to prove it. The welding looks permanent. Tim's optimism is also permanent.
I got detention. DETENTION. For not doing my homework. I'm 42. The homework was 'draw a map of your ideal escape route and label the cardinal directions.' I said I didn't want to. Tim's smile didn't waver. 'That's okay,' he said. 'Detention bus is very comfortable.' It is not comfortable. It's a bus. With a desk. And a sign that says THINK ABOUT WHAT YOU DIDN'T DO.
I am a 34-year-old woman and I just got a gold star for correctly identifying poison ivy. I put it on my shirt. I am WEARING it. Teacher Tim clapped. The whole bus clapped. I haven't felt this validated since before The Event. The pop quiz on edible fungi was hard but fair. I got a B+. I'm going to study harder. I WANT the A.
Pop quiz at 8 AM: 'Name three ways to purify water. You have 60 seconds. This counts.' It COUNTS. Toward WHAT? Nobody knows. But I studied. I passed. Tim gave me first pick at dinner. I chose the good beans. The GOOD beans. Gold star kids eat first. This is the meritocracy the apocalypse promised. Tim's bell haunts my dreams but I am LEARNING.
Tim announced a FIELD TRIP. Everyone got excited. We boarded the bus marked FIELD TRIP. It did not move. Because it's welded to seven other buses. Tim said 'the real field trip is the knowledge we gain along the way.' We sat in the bus for 2 hours learning about soil composition. He rang the bell when it was over. I have never met a more committed human being. The sweater vest is always clean.
